I personally do not currently have a dog but had a dog as a child for 13 years. I love dogs and really enjoy being around them.

The story of the family whose small poodle, while properly on a leash, was killed by a pitbull, who ran free and was not on a leash, is very sad and very unsettling for me. Here was a family, walking their dog, leashed as per town regulations, to suffer such a loss and traumatic experience is hard to comprehend. And, fortunately the humans involved with this situation were not injured.

How some dog owners, especially those who own dogs who are known to be vicious can allow their dogs to roam free is beyond my understanding. Those owners, who abide by the laws, keep their dogs on a leash when in public, should not be subjected to those owners who simply don’t give a damn.

It is well known that a dog on a leash is vulnerable to any dog who is unleashed and free to attack.

If I had a dog I would do two things:
 1. I would keep my dog on a leash no matter how well behaved I believe they are.
 2. I would consider carrying protection for myself and my pet.
