To The Editor:

Peter Oliver’s September 25 Valley Reporter opinion “Trump’s weird war on crime” is accurate, but omits the key conclusion and how to fix it. The administration claims to be fighting crime, but pardoning the January 6 insurrectionists shows that, for this administration, the only real crime is opposing it.

Jimmy Kimmel’s firing showed how to protest effectively. When people protested by canceling their Disney network subscription, Kimmel was reinstated in just a few days. We don’t have to wait for the 2026 elections to change objectionable behavior.

The political equivalent of canceling a Disney subscription is changing a voter registration from Republican to Independent. It will be effective if enough people change and send a copy of their changed registration to the Republican leadership and to national news outlets.

Protests by Democrats, Independents, and non-voters are ignored by the current administration. The most effective way for you to influence the future is to talk to neighbors with opposing viewpoints. Talking is honoring the good part of Charlie Kirk’s legacy. Listen respectfully to why they support the administration; point out the discrepancies between the administration’s words and actions. If they object to the administration’s actions, ask them to change their voter registration. Voter registrations can easily be updated on the wesbsite: https://vote.vermont.gov/public/dashboard.
