For the season opener, DIII Harwood Union hosted DII Otter Valley for both a varsity and junior varsity matchup, on Saturday, August 30, Otter Valley came out strong with two goals in the first quarter and carried for the rest of the game.
Breanna Bovey and Sohpie Parker scored in the first quarter, Bovey went on to score four goals in the game, and Parker tallied up another as well. Hannah Desabrais, and Hillary Debrais also netted one for the Otters.
In the net for the entire game for Highlanders’ Camille Edgcomb had a total of 34 saves for Harwood.
“Camille is one of our strongest players, she has been working hard in the off season all year long to bring new skills to our team in the defense. In her second year as a goalie ever, she is a fantastic player who works hard and really leaves it all out there on the field. We haven’t had a strong committed goalie like her in our program for some time who also seeks to play at the collegiate level,” said head coach, Katie Martin.
Martin said that the Highlanders are working on their offensive ball movement, and double team tackles before their upcoming games against Milton, and neighboring rivals Montpelier. “We have a lot of new players this year, and it’s the first time in years where our program has enough players for a JV team. We are proud that it’s growing, we now need to focus our efforts on teaching these new players the skills they need to play at this level, and to win. Our hope as a coaching staff is that we can be where we were at the end of last season much faster, and come together as a cohesive, competitive group sooner,” said Martin.
