Jean Conrad Johnson of Moretown, Vermont, passed away peacefully at home with her husband, Moretown, VT

Jean Conrad Johnson of Moretown, Vermont passed away peacefully at home with her husband, Colman Johnson, by her side, on July 3, 2025. Jean was born and raised in Moretown.

Jean was a graduate of St. Michael’s College four-year art degree program in Colchester. After college and marrying the love of her life, Colman Johnson, they moved to the Boston area where she worked for many years in a bookstore owned by her in-laws at Harvard Square.

Returning to Duxbury, Vermont, in 1993, she worked as a bank teller and became a long-term employee at Community National Bank in Montpelier.  Together with her husband Colman, she also ran a small shop out of her home for years where they sold vintage furniture and Jean’s art work, called “The Spotter’s Shop.”

Jean loved to express herself in her art which often depicted her love of horses and scenes of rural Vermont. She painted in oils on canvas, and was an accomplished needlepoint and hand-hooked rugs artist, where she designed the patterns herself. She loved the wildlife surrounding her Vermont home. Much of her art depicted farm animals and especially her beloved horses. Jean was also passionate about the many songbirds that frequented her home. She loved to paint them and there were many sketches and paintings depicting them all around her house.

There will be a private graveside service and burial honoring Jean’s life in the near future.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Mad River Valley Ambulance Service in Jean’s name or the Meals on Wheels program in Waitsfield. MRVAS personnel were professional, patient and so kind to Jean, and the family appreciates this so very much. Those who prefer, can give a donation to Meals On Wheels in Waitsfield.
