Duxbury Town Meeting Day

Voters approved all warned articles and elected town officers during the annual Town Meeting held March 3 by Australian ballot, conducted through drive-by voting.

Town clerk Maureen Harvey reported that 328 ballots were cast out of 1,176 registered voters. Voters overwhelmingly approved Article 1, adopting a $1,183,524 Town Highway and General Fund budget for fiscal year 2026-2027. The article passed 273-47, with eight blank ballots. The measure authorizes the select board to set the necessary tax rate after completion and lodging of the Grand List.

Article 2, which transfers $125,000 from surplus to the Capital Reserve fund, passed 269-45, with 14 blanks.

Article 3, transferring $20,000 from surplus to the Pavement Escrow account, was approved 282-32, with 14 blanks.

Article 4, transferring $80,000 from surplus to fund the Grant Escrow, passed 239-69, with 20 blanks.

 

 

 

 

Voters also supported Article 5, authorizing expenditure of up to $183,000 from the Capital Reserve for the purchase of a tandem truck. The measure passed 239-73, with 16 blanks.

Article 6, setting October 9, 2026 – the second Friday in October – as the due date for issuance of the tax warrant and payment of real and personal property taxes without discount, passed 282-35, with 11 blanks. The article also establishes an 8% penalty and 1% monthly interest charge on taxes not paid when due. Postmarks will not qualify as date of receipt.

Article 7, which directs that current taxes be paid to the town treasurer and delinquent taxes to the collector of delinquent taxes, passed 300-18, with 10 blanks.

In town officer elections, Daniel Senning was elected moderator to a one-year term with 306 votes. There were no write-in votes and 22 blanks.

 

 

 

 

For two one-year select board seats, Matt Schroeder received 286 votes and Mari Pratt received 258 votes to win election. Three write-in votes were cast, and 109 ballots were left blank for the race.

Gwenna Peters was elected to serve the remaining two years of a three-year select board term with 285 votes. Two write-in votes were cast, and 41 blanks recorded.

No candidate received the required 12 write-in votes to fill a three-year select board seat; 30 write-in votes were cast and 298 ballots were blank.

Alan Quackenbush was elected lister for a three-year term with 290 votes. Two write-ins were recorded, with 36 blanks.

 

 

 

 

No candidates received sufficient write-in votes to fill two Budget Committee seats – one for the remaining four years of a five-year term and one for a full five-year term. Sixteen write-in votes were cast for the remaining term and seven for the five-year term; 312 and 321 ballots, respectively, were left blank.

Jessica Engels was elected to a three-year term on the Cemetery Commission with 293 votes.

Eric Potter was elected first constable with 300 votes, and James L. Welch was elected second constable with 302 votes.

Cindy Senning was elected as Duxbury’s representative to the Harwood Unified Union School District for a three-year term with 289 votes. Four write-ins were recorded, with 35 blanks.
