The Mad River Valley Dog Park is going to the dogs – in the best possible way – with the first annual Rover Roundup, a community celebration and fundraiser on Saturday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the dog park behind Brooks Field on School Road. A rain date is Sunday, October 5.
The day kicks off with a costume parade around the park. Winners will be judged based on “best overall costume,” “best dog/human costume pair” and “best homemade costume.”
The day features a full slate of dog contests, open to all friendly, leashed dogs. Contest registration is $5 per entry and can be done in advance or on the day of the event.
The day’s activities include:
- Best Rescue Story.
- Not So Stupid Pet Tricks.
- Best Kisser.
- Musical Sit.
- Catch Contest.
- Dog of the Roundup – winner earns the cover spot on the upcoming “Dogs of the Mad River Valley” calendar.
Rover Roundup: A day of fun and fundraising for the Mad River Dog Parkere will be prizes for the contests, refreshments, including treats from the Ben & Jerry’s truck, which will offer both ice cream and pup-friendly desserts, a free-play area for off leashing dog play, live music, demonstrations on training, grooming and more. Additionally, there will be nail clipping, grooming and behavior consults as well as vet care, adoption options, and crafts and activities for kids and dogs.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the Mad River Valley Dog Park’s operating fund, which supports ongoing maintenance, insurance, and improvements. The park was made possible by a Vermont Better Places Grant, local donors, and volunteers. It is now operated by a volunteer-led community committee.
The event promises a day of family-friendly fun – leashed furry friends included – with live music, food vendors, craft booths, dog contests, and a silent auction. Suggested donations are $10 per person or $20 per family. Dogs attend for free.
Entries for the contests can be made in advance online at www.mrvdogpark.com or in-person at the park on the day of the Roundup. Each entry will be $5, which will benefit the dog park’s programs.
