It’s high summer. We wait all year for this – the fleeting several months when we don’t wear down and fleece vests (for the most part).
Dawn brings the birds at an impossibly early hour. You could shut the windows and use blinds and curtains to block this crack of dawn pageantry, but why would you?
This summer I’ve been hearing a new bird I’ve never heard before that calls all day, throughout the day around my house. It makes a consistent, crystalline call of four (sometimes three) identical three syllable notes. It’s breathtaking. I reached out to one of our local bird gurus who suggested it is a common yellowthroat and that I’m lucky. I think so. I’m not 100% convinced that the bird call I’m hearing from my computer is the one I’m hearing all day. But either way, it’s magnificent If anyone wants to hear it or confirm the ID send me an email (
Beyond the birds, the fireflies dance at night (and one got in the bedroom one night this week dancing there for a while this week, much to the chagrin of the dogs). The tomatoes are happy and growing visibly along with the peppers and onions and the flowers (this year) fill half of the vegetable garden instead of food.
I’m currently winning the battle between the deer and rabbits over the lily buds and leaves although it took bolts of that berry protective fabric stuck to the ground with landscaping pins. The lawn is lush and the air is so soft it is like a hug. There’s no time like the present to sit on the deck and porch. There’s no time like the present to watch the sunset and watch the sunrise.

Our window on this weather is so finite. Playing outside and being outside feels like an imperative, and it is. It’s high summer. The Fourth of July is this Friday. We’ve arrived at that summer way-station so don’t put off anything slated for this summer! Tempus fugit! You can re-organize closets and cupboards and camping gear in November.
Have a happy Fourth of July. Use your First Amendment rights while you can.
